Types of Surgery

Upstate offers three types of surgery to treat obesity, as well as revision operations.

Details on each surgery are below. Your surgeon will consult with you to consider your preferences and goals to determine the best procedure for you. All patients also attend a seminar where the surgeon further explains the details and benefits of each.

Results for patients are judged not only by weighing less, but also when medical problems improve or get better completely.

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass

roux-en-y bypassThe gastric bypass is one of the most commonly performed operations for treatment of clinically severe obesity. This operation helps patients feel full with a smaller amount of food. The surgeon makes a small pouch at the top part of the stomach. In addition to consuming smaller amounts of food, the food will be digested using a different path as the pouch is attached to the small bowel. The Roux-en-Y is often referred to as the gold standard of bariatric operations. This procedure has been done for many years and most patients have great results.

Gastric Sleeve

gastric sleeveThe gastric sleeve operation helps patients feel full with smaller amounts of food. This is achieved when the surgeon creates a smaller stomach by removing about two thirds of the patient’s present stomach. In addition to feeling full with a smaller amount of food, patients who have had this operation report that they do not feel hungry nearly as often as they used to. Science tells us this may be a result of removing the section of the stomach where “the hunger hormone” ghrelin is produced.

Revision Operations

At Upstate our surgeons are skilled in many areas. On area of expertise is with patients who have had previous bariatric operations. Revision surgeries need to be considered on a case-by-case basis. If you wish to discuss a potential revision with one our surgeons contact us.
